In the morning, take the dough and cut into four equal portions. Take each dough ball and roll it into a long rectangle, approximately 18-20 inches long and 3-4 inches wide.

Instructions. Place the yeast, one teaspoon of sugar, and warm water in a small bowl and give a little stir. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until yeast is bubbly and foamy. While yeast is proofing, mix the flour, remaining ยผ cup sugar, cardamom, and salt in a large bowl. In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, oil, vanilla bean seeds, eggs.

Directions. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, salt, yeast, and vital wheat gluten until well mixed. In another bowl, stir together the honey, olive oil, water, eggs, and raisins. Pour the liquid mixture into the flour mixture, and stir until it forms a dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic.

Repeat until half the loaf is braided, leaving the ends loose. Rotate the loaf. Now take the strand on the right and loop it under the center strand. Take the strand all the way on the left and loop that under the center strand. Repeat until the second half of the loaf is braided, leaving the ends loose again.

Adjust the braid ends and sides with your hands to make everything even. Line a half sheet baking pan with a Silpat silicone mat or parchment paper. Transfer the shaped dough to the baking pan, then cover with greased plastic wrap. Let the shaped dough rise for 45 minutes in a warm place. Preheat the oven to 350 ยฐF.

Heat the butter in another small sauce pan until just melted. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, add the warm water and whisk in the dry yeast. Set the yeast/water mixture aside for at least 5 minutes until the yeast has dissolved and is creamy. Whisk in the milk, sugar, cardamom, salt, and eggs until fully combined.

Brush with egg wash: Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon water. Use a pastry brush to coat the challah with the egg wash. Working quickly, while the egg wash is still wet, sprinkle the sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or sprinkles liberally over the challah, if using.

Step 1: Roll out dough into 3 strand. Step 2: Braid the challah like any other 3 strand challah. Step 3: Bend the braid into a circle. Make sure you leave a large enough hole in the center of the challah. We did this braid twice and didn't leave a big enough hole the second time so after the dough rose there was no longer a hole (see photos below)

To make braided challah with 3 strands: Divide 1 piece of the dough into 3. Roll each piece between your palms and pull into long thin ropes about 18 inches (46 cm) long and 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) wide. Pinch 1 end of all the strands together and plait them: bring the rope on the right over the middle one, then bring the one on the left over it.
